Frequently Asked Questions

A Haemato- Oncologist is a Haematologist and a Medical Oncologist. A Haematologist treats all blood related disorders like anaemia, low platelets, high platelets, low and high WBC counts, thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia etc, these are all benign blood disorders. In addition, a Haematologist also treats all blood and bone marrow cancers like leukemias, all lymphomas & multiple myeloma.

A Medical Oncologist treats all solid tumours and cancers like Breast Cancer, Ovarian & Uterine Cancers, cancers of the lung, colon, rectum, prostate, stomach, oesophagus, etc. Any cancer of any part of the body is treated by a Medical Oncologist.

In the 21st century, we have access to advanced technology that has led to the development of non-invasive treatment options for many types of cancer. These treatments include targeted therapy, oral tablets, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. For some cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, surgery is not always required. Additionally, clinical trials have shown that early-stage breast cancer can potentially be cured with chemotherapy and radiation alone. Today, each cancer patient receives personalized care tailored to their specific cancer’s molecular profile.

Survival rates for cancer patients has increased substantially over the past few decades. On an average, 80% of patients would survive their cancer if they receive the correct treatment promptly. The stage at which the cancer is detected determines the survival. Early-stage cancers can be cured, advanced stage can be controlled. Cancer treatment has improved in leaps and bounds in the 21st century. In the 60s, 70s, 80s, treatment options for cancer were mostly surgical, chemotherapy drugs were limited, personalised care was an unknown term- one size fits all policy was followed. This meant that every cancer received the same treatment irrespective of the stage. This reflected in the survival rates which were poor and a cancer diagnosis was a death sentence.

With the personalised and customised cancer care that is administered, post treatment care and rehabilitation for cancer patients is required only to a limited extent. Modern chemotherapy & targeted therapies are extremely well tolerated with minimal side effects. The patient leads a normal life while his treatment is ongoing. He can continue with his daily routine. What is required on occasion is counselling for the patient to overcome their fear regarding their cancer returning and staying mentally strong. The treating Medical Oncologist is the best person to provide this support.

Yes, cancer support groups & counselling services are available depending on the type of cancer the patient is suffering from. Every cancer has a separate support group. Multiple counselling services can assist in relieving the mental stress & strain the cancer patients and their families endure.

The new cancer treatments have minimal side-effects and are extremely well tolerated. The customised care given ensures that the patient faces no major issues during the therapy. Different drugs have different side-effects. Appetite loss, mild weakness, vulnerability to infection are some of the problems that can be encountered. However, these can be easily tackled and are usually not a cause for concern.

As an Honorary Medical Oncologist and Hematologist, I visit several hospitals that offer the latest and most advanced cancer care. Each patient receives personalized and customized treatment that follows international guidelines. Both daycare and inpatient services are available, and a trained oncology resident and chemotherapy nurse are on call 24/7 to attend to cancer patients. The drugs used are of the highest quality and are provided at cost-effective rates

The follow-up plan after treatment for ovarian cancer depends on the type of treatment received and the stage of the cancer. For example, if the patient received oral or intravenous therapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. Additionally, if the treatment was curative or meant to control the cancer. Typically, patients are scheduled for check-ups with blood tests and scans every three months for the first two years after treatment. This interval then increases to every six months for the next three years. After five years post-treatment, a yearly check-up is generally sufficient. However, if a patient is still receiving ongoing cancer treatment, then follow-up appointments every three months are typically continued.

At any given time, multiple clinical trials and research studies are ongoing in various cancers worldwide. As per your age, the type of your cancer and the stage you are detected in, you could definitely be eligible for a few of these studies. Your treating Medical Oncologist is the appropriate person to guide you regarding participation in clinical trials.

Yes, as your Medical Oncologist and Haematologist I would guide you and help you through out your treatment. Besides treating your cancer, I would decide if other specialists like a Surgeon or a Radiation Oncologist is required in the cancer care and would involve them as needed. If other specialists are needed, I would provide the necessary guidance.
